Starting 2026-08-16, MarkItDown Online converts EPUB ebooks directly to Markdown. Previously EPUB files had to be opened in an ebook reader or renamed to ZIP before any text could be extracted. Now you can drop a .epub file straight into the converter and get a structured Markdown document ready for knowledge bases and AI pipelines.

How EPUB conversion works

Each chapter's title is promoted to a heading so the table of contents becomes a navigable outline. Inline formatting such as bold, italic, and code spans survives the conversion. Footnotes are collected as reference-style links at the end of the document instead of being dropped, and embedded images keep their alt text where the source provides it.

What this means for your workflow
